Chief William Young

1872 – 1897

CHIEF WILLIAM YOUNG 1872 - 1897

William Young was born in Quebec on July 9, 1837.

He came to Ottawa and trained to be a watchmaker and jeweller and started a firm called Young and Radford.

On October 20th 1859 Young joined the Volunteer Central Hook and Ladder Company.

On December 11th 1872 William Young was appointed Chief Superintendent of the Volunteer Fire Brigades in Ottawa’s Upper and Lower Town.

Chief Young set to work on reorganizing the Brigade.

CONQUEROR HOSE COMPANY

The Conqueror Hose Company was named after Ottawa’s first steamer the Conqueror. Here is the hose team in 1874 with Chief Young pictured in the top left.
